The shape of the rim
The Scenic Rim is an area of forested mountain ranges in the Great Dividing Range. The mountains form a ridge in a rough quarter circle, running from south of Toowoomba to Springbrook.
Tamborine Mountain, Lever's Plateau and Lamington Plateau form part of the rim. The Scenic Rim is considered a part of the Gold Coast hinterland.
Land use and protection
Some parts of the rim are well developed. Highways cross them, with facilities for tourists, including Cunninghams Gap. Elsewhere there are private agricultural properties and rural villages, among them Beechmont and Tamborine Mountain. National parks and nature reserves protect much of the remaining area.
A biodiversity hot spot
The Scenic Rim sits in a biodiversity hot spot where tropical, temperate and western species overlap. Biologists call this region the Macleay-McPherson Overlap. Rainfall is fairly high, particularly in the east. In the west, drier conditions produce different vegetation, including dry eucalyptus forest.
Recognition
The Scenic Rim has been called a great natural treasure trove of Queensland. In 2021, it was named a Lonely Planet top destination for 2022.
